On Saturday 12th October, music organisation Un-Convention, The Manchester School of Art, and the Manchester Weekender are collaborating on a very special event in the city.
The event coincides with the 175th anniversary of the Art School and aims to celebrate Manchester, music, art and creativity. It will examine what makes the city such a vibrant and innovative place.
Speakers will include musicians, artists, designers, scientists, academics, architects and many more – from those who have written top ten hits, to those developing Graphene, the next chapter in Manchester’s illustrious history as a city of leading thinkers and doers.
On the day itself, aside from the speakers, we have also set ourselves the challenge of recording, producing and giving away a CD, from start to finish in six hours. As an added twist we are working with the students from the school to individually design 200 sleeves on the day. The idea is to illustrate what is possible when creative people get together around an idea.
We’re getting in touch for two reasons. First of all to invite you along on the 12th October for what we hope will be a fun and inspirational day for all involved.
The event is free to attend – although places are limited so please register first at:
Secondly, we’d like to invite you to design a sleeve for the album we make on the day. We’ve included a blank sleeve that you can print, paint, emboss or glue diamonds to should you wish. We will combine these with those produced by the art students and designers at the event to create a truly unique album - not only will it have been produced from scratch in under six hours, but every copy will have a totally individual sleeve.
The final copies will be given out to the audience at the end of the day.
The brief for the design is totally open – simply that the day itself reflects the creativity and innovation of Manchester.
For info, the artists taking part in the recording are:
We do hope you’d like to get involved with the project.
If you would like to make a sleeve for the day (either using the blank provided, or by your own means), then please could you return it to:
